Valley of Flowers Festival Has Some Changes in Store This Year

The festival gets shorter and parents must be present with those 18 and under on Knights of Columbus grounds.

As the Valley of Flowers festival gears up for another year of family fun and celebration, residents and visitors will notice a number of changes for this year’s festival.

According to a press release, the festival will go to a three-day format of Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In years past, the festival started on Thursday with “Family Knight” at the Knights of Columbus grounds.

In addition, an adult must accompany those under the age of 18 while on the Knights of Columbus grounds.

Mayor Tom Schneider said that in years past there were too many teenagers hanging around the Knights grounds, and he wanted to have patrons who would enjoy the festival.

“It was time for us to create an atmosphere that we use to have,” he said. “I think it will be a great time, and be one of the best festivals.”

Kati Mahoney, manager of Florissant Old Town Partners, said that families will appreciate not have huge groups of teenagers hanging around the Knights grounds.

Mayor Schneider said that the shortened schedule is to ensure that every night is family night and to make it easier on festival volunteers.

What are your thoughts on the changes for this year's festival?

It is a shame that a few bad apples have to ruin a long time tradition of hanging out with friends at the fair. I can remember walking with my friends to the fair and spending all our babysitting money on rides and games. I really dont see much turn out for this years fair then if parents have to be with their kids.

How disappointing. Of course, Florissant is taking away the affordable night. My family won't be able to attend this year.

Lisa:

I believe there will be a bargain on Friday night for families where rides are one ticket.
