The Rev. Udell Moss Passes Away at 86

Founder of North County Christian School, Ferguson Church of the Nazarene died Thursday night.

The Rev. Udell Moss, who founded the North County Christian School as well as the Ferguson Church of the Nazarene, passed away on Thursday. He was 86.

“It is with sad and yet glad hearts we announce the ‘Heaven Homegoing’ of Pastor Udell Moss,” North County Christian School Debbie Dykhouse wrote on the school’s website.

Born and raised in St. Louis, Moss found his calling early at the age of 7 and never deviated from his journey to become a preacher, according to his obituary.

After serving in the army, he attended the Olivet Nazarene College, where he also met his future wife, Doris. They were married in 1947.

Three years later, the Rev. Moss received an opportunity to start a church in Ferguson. After searching his heart and soul, he built the church and preached to its congregation for the next 31 years.

During those years, Moss and his wife Doris founded North County Christian School.

“Pastor Moss was well known for his inventiveness, enthusiasm, encouragement, and fun-loving spirit,” Dykhouse wrote. “He was a strong supporter of North County Christian School, loving God, loving children, and finding many ways he could meet the spiritual and physical needs of NCCS families.”

Two of the Rev. Moss’s children, Wayne Moss and Sheryl Dampf, currently work at North County Christian School.

He leaves behind his wife Doris of 63 years, four children, Wayne, Sheryl, Sharon Bushey and Sharlene Valdez, as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services for the Rev. Moss were held Monday, July 18 at 9:30 a.m. at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

The family requests memorials be sent to the Rev. and Mrs. Udell Moss NCCS Fund in care of North County Christian School, 845 Dunn Rd., Florissant, MO 63031.

There are so many good and wonderful things that I remember about Bro. Moss. He had a special connection with the teen groups and young children throughout the years. I first met Rev. Moss when I was about 9 years old (that was over 40 years ago). He coached softball, he took the youth group on outings all over the country, he roller-skated at Aloha the first Monday of every month. He played ping-pong, He was a world champion Yo-Yo artist (no kidding). He played a card game called Rook. He was a fun person to be around. Most importantly, He taught his youth how to live in love and respect for each other and that God loved each one of us. By his example, we learned that God loved us so much that he sent his own Son (Jesus Christ) to die for us so that we can have eternal life in the presence of God. And how we can achieve this eternal hereafter. No matter what activity we were engaged in, tearing down a car engine or playing basketball, Bro. Moss always had a way to wrap this truth up in what we were doing. My fondest of memories of this man was a broad memory, that he not only talked the talk, but walked the walk, to the very end. Greg,

Good to hear you're alive and kicking. Rev. Moss crossed my mind this morning, I googled him and found he'd passed away. North County possessed some divine magic and Rev. Moss was the visionary. We were blessed to have been associated with some dedicated Christians in our youth.

I live about an hour away from Gasaway. I try and keep him on the straight and narrow, but you know Jim. He's a wild one.

God bless,

Frank Burns
