St. Louis-Area Residents Complete Chicago Marathon

A Florissant woman competed in the Chicago Marathon on Oct. 7. See how they compared to the race's champion.

 

Hundreds of St. Louis-area residents competed in the Chicago Marathon Oct. 7.

None finished better than 41-year-old Lawrence Wang, of St. Louis, who finished in 539th place overall (out of nearly 50,000 participants) with a time of 2 hours and 55 minutes and 4 seconds.

Hope Rathnam, a 24-year-old St. Louisan, finished 77th in the women's field (870 overall), with a time of 3:00:05. That was the best mark by a woman among St. Louis-area participants.

Richard Bender, of Chesterfield, came in as the oldest area runner to complete the race. Bender is 63 years old and finished with a time of 5:36:31.

The youngest area racer, meanwhile, was Nicholas Miller, 19, of Lake Saint Louis, who clocked in at 3:48:22, which was good enough for 34th place in his division.

Celebrating its 35th running, the Chicago Marathon is one of five World Marathon Majors. 

Tsegaye Kebede won the men's competition with a record-breaking time of 2:04:38, while Atsede Baysa set an event record time of 2:22:03. Both winners are from Ethiopia.

Michigan-native Dathan Ritzenhein was the top U.S. finisher in 9th place, with a time of 2:07:47— the third fastest American of all time.
