Poll: Would You Support a New Florissant TIF?

With the redevelopment of Plaza Madrid seemingly hinging on a TIF, what do you think about the possibility?

A couple of weeks ago, Inland Development Group proposed a redevelopment of Plaza Madrid, a strip center that sits on New Halls Ferry Road, but it didn't come without a bit of a price tag.

The group said that it would need $4.5 million in tax increment financing (TIF) to be able to make the project work.

Last week, the Florissant City Council had its first reading on a bill that would update the city's TIF process to comply with the state's process, according to the Independent News.

In previous years, the City Council has been conservative and stern in reviewing any TIFs or community improvement districts (CIDs) for the city.

What do you think of the proposed TIF? Would you support it or be against it?

The Florissant City Council should reseach this proposal like they did the Walmart deal. Don't rush into it just because it is needed.

No, I won't support it. Why rebuild a shopping center in an area where it would just get run down again? It's like that old saying, "You can polish a turd, and it's still a turd."

If Inland Development Group want to build then they should use their money and not someone elses. Large companies of doing this all over today and the residents and tax payers get nothing for what they deliver to them. Florissant would be wise to tell them no and let them go elsewhere or do it themselves if they want.

The area needs to be revitalized and I think this is a good way to make it happen. A furniture store, churches chicken, and a burnt up night club is doing nothing to help. I say use the TIF and breath some life back into the place. Look what it did for cross keys!

The whole concept for Plaza Madrid is ridiculous. No company should get a tax break for wanting to build here. I am a Walmart hater and will not shop there. When we lose businesses because of them remember that when you vote for city government.

I agree the city council should investigate. Last I heard this redevelopment was to include a Dollar General and some other stores Florissant already has enough of. Why should tax payers pay to finance a plaza that will only give us stores we already have? Put in something new or worth having and then we at least have something to discuss. Otherwise it is a no brainer no all the way around.

You know, a TIF is a way to have Florissant residents pay for the costs to start a new business adventure but then not to collect on that investment even if it succeeds. If the investors are unwilling to pay for their own business development they must be concerned about it's success. NO MORE TIFs IN FLORISSANT!!

Agree wholeheartedly! IF one takes part in a business venture, they must take a leap of faith. IF that entrepreneur is to succeed, they must give their all...by investing in the consumers who reside in that neighborhood. This may be accomplished by hiring local individuals, paying local taxes, as well as giving back to the community in charitable works. Any venture that tries to avoid giving back to the community has a predestined themselves for failure, in my mind. You must first give to receive.
