Part 1 of 2: Florissant Man Takes On Quadruple Bypass Challenge

The "Man vs. Food"-type challenge pits one man against a burger and fries platter weighing as much as 4 pounds.

The server set down the normal silverware, mustard, ketchup, salt and pepper on Thursday night at , but a bottle of Pepto Bismol, a towel and a bucket quickly followed behind them.

The bar staged its first “Quadruple Bypass” challenge. Challenger Todd Edelen of Florissant decided to celebrate his 31st birthday with a challenge that he’d been excited to do.

“I’ve always wanted to do something like this,” he said.

The tall obstacle challenge has all of the makings for a Man v. Food episode finale. It’s a tall burger that includes chili cheese-and-cheddar burger, a jalapeño-and-pepper jack cheeseburger, American cheeseburger and a provel-and-bacon burger.

The entire platter consists of:

  • 2 pounds of ground Angus beef
  • five pieces of Texas Toast
  • 1 pound of fries (surrounding the burger)
  • Chili
  • Cheddar cheese
  • Onion straws (on each layer)
  • Jalapeños
  • Pepper jack cheese
  • Bacon
  • Provel
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Onion
  • Pickle

If a challenger eats the entire tray of food, he or she receives a $20 gift certificate, in order to pay for the meal, a T-shirt and a place on Gettemeier’s Wall of Fame.

Edelen didn’t enter the challenge lightly, however. He said that throughout the week he prepared himself by eating 3 pounds of Taco Bell each night followed by four Big Macs from McDonald’s.

General manager and challenge creator Chris Kenyon estimated the food platter at 4 pounds total.

The challenger gets 45 minutes to eat the entire platter, but before any taste buds can be touched, the managers make sure to have the challenger sign a waiver and release form, in which the challengers understand the risks of the food and won't hold anyone liable for injuries that may be sustained.

Around 7:50 p.m. on Thursday night, Edelen sat down to take on the challenge with the entire bar cheering for him.

As the timer started, Edelen started devouring the burger.

Check back on Florissant Patch later to see how he fared and if Gettemeier’s has its first challenger champion.
