Just a Rumor: No Shooting at Valley of Flowers Festival

Florissant Police Department said it's a false report.

Several readers and residents emailed me this morning to inquire about a shooting or possible murder during Saturday night's Valley of Flowers.

After speaking to the Florissant Police Department, it's just a rumor. According to the department, a call was made to the them last night about a shooting near the festival but after being checked out, it turned out to be a false report.

The 50th annual Valley of Flowers Festival concludes Sunday.

My wife heard about this reported shooting on KTRS radio Saturday night.
It was reported on a show called Handle on the Law.
The commentator even made a joke about it.

Then how were there plenty of eye witnesses to shots fired? The police department is full of it. At least the ones that like to cover up what really goes on.

A Shooting?
Well..... There was no shooting but there were shot fired. How do I know? I, my wife and son saw the young man or teen pull out a gun ahd fire the shots into the air - all within 10 feet of our car. So there was no one shot but shots were fired.

Florissant is going to Pot! Bring in more of those young bandgies let them write in the sewers. Make florissant Ghetto just like what they are use too. Not like what we are all use to. Pretty soon florissant is going to be like North city if people dont step up and start calling when they see something going on!

I was driving home from a birthday party saturday early evening and right at Lindbergh and Patterson in White Castles parking lot was about 20 young kids running from police. Does anyone know what that was about? i moved to Florissant from Bellefontaine 3 years ago and i love it. Valley of the Flowers is the only time i hate leaving my home.

The Valley of Flowers is a great time to load up on lawn furniture. Just drive down Florissant road Friday night and pick what chairs you want.

Just kidding!!!!!

I think any North County person knows that Saturday night is going to be filled with teens and more likely than not drunken behavior at Valley of Flowers. That's not unique to Valley of Flowers and it's not to say that the behavior is ok. I personally don't go to any mall, movie or place where parents can drop off their kids on a Saturday night because they are goofy and think doing the silliest things are cool. Is a fight surprising? No. I've lived in this area my entire life and before the "ghetto" people J wolff mentioned lived here, there were still incidents. Sorry to say J wolff, you can't blame those you may feel uncomfortable being around but only have the courage to say so on an Internet platform.

Florissant has been called "ghetto" for how many years now??? Evidentally some of us are still here and by choice. Bad things happen everywhere!! Even in richest of area's their's some pervert teaching your kids or a neighbor who is watching your every move! Just examples, point is so sick of hearing how "ghetto" it is and how it's going down! When? Still here! Just gets old and makes me wonder why people who don't live here feel the need to talk bad about Florissant, and the one's who talk bad and still live here who obviously don't understand they can leave at anytime. Come on police officers all over this country can be corrupt, and they can also be amazing people who save lives, NOT just Florissant! For the record been here 30yrs and loved every second, and the only reason I'll eventually leave is becuase I'm becoming disappointed in some of our public school which many have had decisions made for them. Bottom line, time for a new topic, and some to open their eyes wider! :)

As a resident... Florissant is exponentially more ghetto now than it was when I moved here circa '94. The Valley of Flowers in my opinion, is just about the best bellwether of how ghetto the area has become. I felt safe there long ago, as a kid, walking around with my sister, but don't really feel safe their now as a 24 year old. So.... just sayin'

Matt I agree 100% I was walking the other day just as it was turning dark and there were some ghetto kids making cracks about how they need to do some writting in the sews. What ever speak clearly. Then the one thug said hays look at that chicks. If i were a younger young lady I would have been frightened. Shame where are the parents?

Matt, J, thanks for voicing you're opinion and telling it like it is. How can anyone deny that the valley of flowers has gone downhill in the last 10 years? I wonder what changed?...wink...wink. watch the documentary "Spanish lake" that comes out this summer and that may tell you. Ashley, stacey...you sound like like the typical sheltered liberals that I have to hear on the news every day.

Did you watch it Kevin? I'm pretty sure the documentary discussed white flight and how when people run, businesses close and people stop investing in an area due to their own bias perceptions, it causes an area to deteriorate. There's nothing wrong with addressing that when poor quality people move into an area it looks bad. I could have said I've seen more than enough trailer trash in the area also, but that would be a horrible misconception because I don't know the people came from trailers. It's better to address the real issue which is people today are loosing respect for mankind in general. Whether it be you looking at (I'll go ahead and say it since you won't) black people and assuming they are ghetto because they are different that you. Or a black person or person of another color looking and you and assuming you are racist because you cross the street when you see them walking your way. I don't know where you all live. I live in Hazelwood but grew up in Florissant. My mom is close with all the people on her block and they still keep their doors unlocked, windows open and kids run freely to ANY neighbors house. She lives next door to a person from Jordan on one side, a white lady on the other and a black family two houses down. The beauty is they are all different but live together in peace. Stop throwing hate and throw out some love.

Im am 25 years old and as a resident of florissant all my life I can tell you that it is blatantly and painfully obvious what the problem in florissant is. Kevin, Matt and jwolf think about it when did it really start getting bad in florrisant it can almost be pinpointed to one single event. The buy out and subsequent closing of the city of kinlock. Even a blind man can tell that florissant is getting extremely "ghetto" you can see it every where you go, and the valley of flowers is a 3 day festival showcasing this fact every fiirst weekend of may.

Ya know Stacey, it is time for some people to open their eyes wider and see the big picture. Of course, I'm speaking of the unwanted Valley of Flowers goers. Unfortunately, they aren't going to open their eyes and see that they ruin everything. Let's see... as a kid in Florissant, I went to the VOF every year with my family.... no cops at the entrance, no dress code, everyone having fun. Completely ruined.

I'm definately not Liberal but you must be 100% to be able to judge another, did I call you a name or guess what religion you are sir? I'm not denying that Florissant has changed just stating not much to me, and I attend a lot if not all events, and have small children who go to school's here and participate in other activities as well. Just said gets annoying having to hear how ghetto it is now and horrible when everyone has a choice to DO something about what they dislike or MOVE somewhere else! What's the real point of of going on and on about how horrible it is here? Maybe it makes people feel good about themselves? Or you think your rude words will stop the evil, wrongdoers? Why does NO ONE acknowledge the fact the similiar situations happen elsewhere too? If you hate the VOF that bad, don't go! I personally ONLY go on Thursday night AKA Family Night and LOVE it! It's super cheap and everyone is friendly, and very famiy oriented night all together. Their are still police there, but I prefer police presence everywhere that has a large amount of people, especially with alcohol. As far as dress code, it's not just the VOF some cities, and tons of businesses have the same dress code "no saggy pants" or "no hoodies" not just VOF. I know people who have moved to Wentzville, or close by there who love it but wish they had events such as VOF. It's not just Florissant who has changed it's the country as a whole and it will always be changing.

Yes Stacey because it is really easy for a family to pick up their stuff and move, and doing something about it, lets say hypothetically I wanted to organize a town hall meeting inviting my fellow concerned neighbors to talk about the problems plaguing our lovely town of Florissant, this would be doing something about and addressing the problem correct? But then when the problem gets addressed and we know what the problem is, we would be called a racist group of individuals, and any members of the so called committee or group that were "minorities" at the outset of said meetings would have there own groups formed condemning the first group. When it really has nothing to do with color, it has to do with being a decent law abiding, respectable person. And let's face it the majority of the people in question here ARE NOT that at all.

I agree Rob. For instance the people down the street from me are a lovely couple but once a year at school time there grandkids move from the city to there home. Then they go to our schools. The neighbors and I did our neighborhood watch and took plenty of pictures and the school board got involved and sent the kids back to the city to attend there own schools.

Oh and "Family Night" don't you think that is a little sketchy seeing how the whole idea behind the Valley of Flowers is to get families and neighbors together to celebrate our great city. I, for one, find it a little ridiculous that there has to be a "family night" in the first place. When I was growing up and going to the Valley of Flowers which wasn't that long ago you only had to worry, and I say that with the smallest amount emphasis possible that the bikers in the beer garden would fight with one another and even then the problem would be contained with no guns or knives involved by either the bikers and or the police. Growing up I never saw police walk around with night clubs out and dogs and I do not blame them there are too many gangster wanabees with guns knifes and drugs walking around the grounds now and days. And Rahib in regards to your earlier post you are and IDIOT and have no idea what you are talking about, I bet you are the kind of person to talk down on the police every chance you get to try and sound cool and hip, but will not hesitate to call the cops when you feel "threatened". The point is this town is and has been changing for the worse and as much as it pains me to say it because I do love this place it truly is "one of a kind" but it will never be the same.

I heard family night is to keep the hoodlums out so families can enjoy there time with there kids so they are not afraid of the outside people. That is a shame. We use to walk to the valley of flowers and feel safe. Even going on picnics was a fun safe thing back in the day. Last summer an older group of people were having a picnic at Bangert pool. A couple thugs as i call them walked up and helped themselves to a couple of cookies and left this made the older citizens so upset that they packed up and left there picnic. Now why should these older respected people have to go through this?Do they need guards at a simple picnic?Yes things are going to pot! my Older Aunt carries mace now.

I have always lived in florissant and refuse to move "across the bridge". I am raising 3 kids but I do send them to catholic schools but not because of behavior in public ( that's everywhere) but for them to be able to celebrate their religious beliefs.

Actually the 1st year the VOF got really bad there were rumors of not having it at all, and the next year they tried Family Night. It wasn't broadcasted as much, and we went and loved it as well as the other 50 or so families that read about it! Each year Thursday night at the VOF has gotten amazing reviews and wayyyy more then 50 people. There is NO beer garden open, it's only from 5pm to 8pm, and ride tickets are 1$ as well as every ride only needing one ticket. It brings back memories of my childhood, like it use to be up there. I saw many teens getting turned away becuase they weren't with mom and dad but that was all. Very spacious and tons of small children riding rides, games, etc. You should really try it before you judge that as well :) Trust me I know it's not easy to up and move, but if you so passionately against living here, and see no other options, as well as deem it "dangerous" what option do you really have?

I'm not judging family night, obviously the point is well beyond your grasp or concept so let me enlightened you. There shouldn'thave to be a family night period, the whole God damn 3 day festival is for families, and I agree I bet on those Thursday night its great it should be that way the whole damn weekend. But because if ignorant, disrespectful juveniles as well as adults that are more than likely those individuals parental units that could give two s***s about the law or anything for that matter except for what they want. Whether you choose to acknowledge it or not you know what the problem is. One day you will realize.

Wow! This is the last comment I will leave about this becuase as Aja said it's a free speech forum, but cursing shows your anger and that's not why this site is here. Family Night is for small kids mainly and the only night there is no beer garden. If teens come their w/ their parents and stay with them. I believe those are the main reason for Family Night. The rest of the weekend beer garden is open and the little kiddos have a hard time getting on rides, etc because of the amount of people who attend. Believe or not sir, A LOT of people still attend! May not be the people YOU like, but that sir with all due respect is YOUR problem. One day you will realize violence is everywhere these days for many reasons. Thanks for enlighting me on how completely rude, judgemental, and hypocritical some people still are, which is all you just did. As I stated I love Florissant, you have much hatred towards the city, invest your anger in to moving or making a change. Thanks everyone, was a great forum until now, and appreciate all of your views, etc. Have a nice day, the weather is beautiful GO ENJOY IT, PROMISE you won't get hurt :)

Stacey Rob does not have hatred to the city if you looked at what he is saying it is what has moved into the city. Florissant just needs to get a grip on who and what is moving into our city and if you can not see that then maybe you are not looking at the entire picture. There shouldn't have to be a family night. I realize it is a nice thing but years ago it was always a family night.

Mindi Dear...Ghetto means alot of things..Ghetto is mostly used in the Caribbean. It is a form of Dioelec or Creole.
Ghetto means a run down street ,a bad place, where gangs mostly live.
For example I would say Slang town has a lot of violence with poor people and small unpainted places. That is a Ghetto

Lived in Florissant for 45 years and have finally gave up and getting ready to move across the river. People give up your false hope, Florissant is done for. Give it up and let it turn into the ghetto it is destined to become. Move while you still can, before your property value drops to a fraction of its current value. Go drive through Spanish Lake right now to see what Florissant will be like about 10 years. Boarded up houses, vacant businesses, Liquor stores, pawn and sex shops and check into cashes at every corner. Its a damn shame, but lets be honest here, just let all of north county turn into the next east st.louis. It won't happen over night but it will happen. There is nothing you can do to stop it.

How can and do these beautiful communities bring such awful people in? Awful by meaning people who dont care about there homes, neighbors whom they allow to live with them, aunts, cousins cousins of cousins and florissant doesnt know until a concerned citizen calls the public works who say I will pass it on and they dont. we need an all new system. Like check up on these people after they have moved in. when you notice there are beds in the living rooms like the home on waterford then maybe there are too many people living in the house...

I agree J wolff. It's a shame, but I think its useless fighting the inevitable. My neighbor hood is turning ghetto at an accelerated pace. I live in the pleasant hollow subdivision and on my street alone there are 4 houses for sale, two foreclosures, one vacant and two rental homes right next to me. My home value is about what I paid for it in 1992. That's twenty years of investing in my house flushed down the sh$$ter just about overnight. There is no hope.

I was in the store the other day and this young black man waited for me to pass him and i said thank you to the young man and the mother said why you do that for her? I was like seriously. When I was getting juice the young man came up to me and said I am sorry and i said you are a wonderful young man you have nothing to be sorry for. He smiled and walked away. Starts at home people. Do you not see this? The young man was embarressed by his own mother. Shame on her.
