UPDATE: It's a Tie!

Pat Stinnett and Steve Purgahn are deadlocked at 470 votes, and Ward 6 remains without a new councilman.

UPDATED: Thursday at 9:30 a.m.

The official April 5 municipal election results have been calculated, and Ward 6 remains without a new city councilman.

According to City Clerk Karen Goodwin, Pat Stinnett and Steve Purgahn are tied at 470 votes a piece. Third candidate Ben Eye received 336 votes.

Goodwin said that this is a first for the city of Florissant.

There are two options for candidates that must be decided by Thursday. The winners can opt to flip a coin or participate in some sort of drawing, or they will be put on the Aug. 2 election ballot alongside candidates for the Ward 3 City Council seat, which is being vacated by mayor-elect Tom Schneider.

If the candidates opt for a run-off election, current Ward 6 Councilman Andrew Podleski would remain in his seat until August, Goodwin said.

We’ll update with more information as we receive it.

These poor guys! They will have to run a whole campaign again. That takes a lot of resources. I hope both are run with integrity!

A flip of the coin is an easy way to resolve this without a lot of extra turmoil and expense.

Yeah...but I'm pretty sure neither one wants to have it decided that way. If you were one of the candidates, would you agree to a coin toss?

If their true moral compass is to represent their district, rather than win an election, they would toss the coin and decide the issue vs. waiting until August while key decisions are being made without regard for their area.

True moral compass? Seriously? Do you really believe the stuff you write? I mean, your lofty rhetoric seems a little too much for a discussion about a city council race. I was simply trying to point out that, after all that hard work, it didn't seem likely that the candidates would agree to a coin toss.

(BTW, you never answered my question. )

I would put the good of the community i.e., being represented, ahead of my personal desire to be that representative. After all, exactly half of the voters who voted believe their candidate is qualified to hold the position.

But this is ideal for me. I didn't vote for either of them, but do have a clear opinion between these two that I would like to vote on. I'd hate it to be decided by a coin flip when all of us that didn't vote for either of them haven't said anthing about them.

@ Geri Green: Yeah, right. You'll forgive me if I don't believe you.

@ Two Sheds & Geri Green: I heard Purgahn was ok with a coin toss, but not Stinnett, so there will be a runoff. Both would have had to agree.

Who represents the district until the runoff?

Andrew Podleski would remain in the seat until a winner could be determined.
