Hazelwood Central Student Arrested for Stabbing of Another Student

The student stabbed a friend in the leg while playing in school. He has been arrested and faces criminal charges as well as expulsion from the school.

A 17-year-old student was stabbed in the leg Tuesday afternoon at Hazelwood Central High School, resulting in a late dismissal of students, according to a KMOV report.

Students were on lockdown in the high school following a stabbing of a student by another student. Police have arrested the student with the knife, and the juvenile is in custody, according to the article.

According to a letter sent to parents from Principal Cheroyl Mitchell, two students were playing when one of them accidentally hurt the other while pretending to poke him with the handle of a knife.

“Even though the students were playing around, we take this situation very seriously,” Mitchell wrote in the email. “The safety and security of our students and staff is a priority. We are reviewing and re-examining safety procedures.”

St. Louis County police are pressing for charges against the juvenile and the student will also be disciplined according to the Hazelwood School District’s behavior guidelines.

According to the district’s policy, a student who brings a knife or weapon could be suspended from school for at least one calendar year or expelled.

The injured student received medical attention and was transported with non-life threatening injuries to the hospital.
