Florissant Valley Campus Recognized for Sustainable Efforts

The St. Louis Community college campus has been named one of 20 colleges for its sustainable commitment and is in a competitive video challenge.

St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley has gone green and has a number of recent recognitions to prove it.

Recently, the college was named as one of 20 colleges and universities in the nation for its commitment to sustainability through the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), according to a press release. The Florissant Valley campus is also a finalist for the 2013 Second Nature Climate Leadership Awards.

The campus has a number of sustainable initiatives, including an update to its Greenhouse Gas inventories, founding of a Climate Action Plan, the development of an eco-garden and an increase in recycling stations. The campus also hosts an annual green fair to involve the community in green options available to them.

Florissant Valley campus President Marcia Pfeiffer signed the ACUPCC in 2008, according to a news release.

“Just as sustainability is a matter for both inside and outside the classroom, the faculty and students of St. Louis Community College, Florissant Valley together contributed to the campus with an extraordinary show of public awareness-raising,” David Hales, president of Second Nature, a nonprofit organization, said in a press release. “The campus eco-garden is an important step towards integrating sustainable living with the student experience.”

The campus is also a part of a video competition that promotes sustainability initiatives, and the public can vote for the campus video on the Planet Forward website.

“We are delighted to be a part of the Celebrating Sustainability video competition. Florissant Valley has worked hard to demonstrate our commitment to being a viable and “green” community partner,” Pfeiffer said in a press release. “The eco garden, Green Fair and other Florissant Valley sustainability projects represent ways for us to live up to our commitment to climate neutrality.”
