The Florissant Police Department is now questioning a person of interest from Monday morning's shooting.
Mike Vernon, 33, a Florissant police officer, was shot twice Monday morning in an attempt to stop a burglar. He was shot in the Surrey Plaza Shopping Center when he approached the suspect.
Police had originally thought two people were involved in the crime but have now narrowed that scope to the person being questioned. The name of the suspect has not been released.
Florissant Police Captain Sean Fagan said Monday morning that the officer was shot twice and is in the hospital in critical condition undergoing surgery.
Update (10:40 a.m.): Vernon's surgery had to be stopped because of extensive bleeding. Police officials remain hopeful for recovery.
Fagan said with the prime suspect in custody, the search is winding down.
"He's a military veteran, a reservist, and while he's worked for our department he 's done two deployments in Iraq," Fagen stated in an interview. "Very good officer. Our prayers are obviously with him and his family right now for a speedy recovery."
Officer Andy Haarmann tells Patch Vernon has been with the Florissant Police Department for seven years. He worked the first three years as a corrections officer and then moved to his current position as police officer.
Police have canvassed the Wedgwood subdivision area, near Cross Keys Middle School and Wedgwood Elementary, in search of the shooter. The burglary happened near Lindbergh and Cougar, and police have arrested on suspect, according to Fox 2.
Residents in the subdivision area have been asked to stay in their home as police continue to search the area. Residents are encouraged to call 911, if they notice anyone suspicious.
The suspect is described as a black man around six feet tall, with dreadlocks, wearing a white t-shirt with blue jeans.
