Florissant Police Officer Mike Vernon Keeps Positive Outlook

Florissant Police Department's Capt. Sean Fagan gave an update on the condition of his colleague.

Officer Mike Vernon, who was shot in the early hours of Memorial Day, remains in good positive spirits, according to Florissant Capt. Sean Fagan.

Fagan said at a press conference Tuesday that he’s been visiting with Officer Vernon since the incident, and he’s been alert and upbeat.

Fagan said that he does have paralysis that he’s not sure is temporary, but Officer Vernon is staying positive.

“This man truly is a hero,” Fagan said. “He says he’s going to recover 100 percent.”

Florissant Police Chief William Karabas said that he immediately went to the hospital and stayed at Officer Vernon’s bedside 12 hours following the shooting.

“All the outpouring of love and support has made this difficult time a little easier for us,” Karabas said. “I’ve been in law enforcement for many years … this takes a lot of you.”

Capt. Fagan clarified that Vernon has not been into surgery as of Tuesday, and that doctors are continuing to observe and evaluate his condition before making next-step decisions.

Fagan did share the first thing Vernon said after he saw him.

“Tell everyone thank you for the help they’ve given me,” Vernon said.
