With only one dual meet remaining in the 2012 Municipal Swim League North season, the 174 members of the Florissant Swim Team have one goal -- a second undefeated season.
In 2011, the team finished with a record of 8-0, the first time the team has accomplished a perfect dual meet record since its inception in 2003. Going into Thursday's meet at Dellwood, the Fish have outscored its opponents by at least 160 points in each meet.
The Florissant team captured its first conference title in 2010 but was unable to surpass rival Ferguson in dual meets.
In 2011, the team finally completed victories in both dual meets and took home a second straight conference title.
"The coaches know each [swimmer] personally and go to them to congratulate or improve them," said parent Terry Patrick.
Parent volunteer Kristy Moore said her favorite thing about the team is "watching the kid's faces when they check their mailboxes the next morning and pull out ribbons."
Ninth-year swimmer Rose vonHatten, who will attend Truman State University when the season concludes, said, "My favorite part so far has been our undefeated season. I know we work really hard all summer, and it's rewarding to see that pay off."
Head coaches Amanda Eye and Jenoa Olson have been with the team for its 10 year existence and have seen exactly what Rose is eluding to.
"We love to see our kids set new personal bests for themselves," Olson said. "Whether mastering a new competitive stroke or dropping time, we love to see the sense of accomplishment on their faces. Our team is successful because of our coaches, our parent support and the kids who come out and swim lap after lap to improve their technique."
Coach Cynthia Hei said her favorite thing about the team is "the excitement of the swimmers when they accomplish "1st's." First length of the pool, first dive, first meet, first IM, etc!"
Members of the team practice each morning at Bangert Pool and range in age from 3-18 years old.
The conference preliminaries will be held Saturday, July 21 at 7 a.m. at the Splash at Wabash (January-Wabash Park) with the conclusion of the swim season taking place at the conference finals on Tuesday, July 24.
