Florissant Fireworks Planned to Continue as Scheduled

Florissant Parks and Recreation assistant director confirms that the show will go on, for now.

With blazing temperatures cancelling and postponing fireworks shows around the St. Louis area, Florissant has confirmed that the city plans to push forward with their show.

Todd Schmidt, assistant director of Florissant Parks and Recreation, said Friday that officials feel confident keeping the show as planned.

Schmidt said that there have been discussions of cancelling or postponing between him, the fireworks company and the Florissant Valley Fire Protection District, but all feel comfortable keeping things as scheduled.

He did indicate that it doesn’t mean things can’t change.

The Florissant Fourth of July Celebration is scheduled to take place at the James J. Eagan Center at 7:30 p.m. with a concert by Northwinds Concert Band.

Although this fireworks show has been a tradition for years I think it is about time to discontinue it. This year especially since the weather is not cooperating and everything is so dry the city is just asking for something to happen or go wrong. This is also an expense that the city can really do without and I am sure the money spend could be put to better use. Think about conserving instead of spend, spend. spend just like Washington and all the other democrats do just waste money on things that are not necessay.

Since you can't stay on topic, let me point out that the majority of the deficit that we are looking at was created by Republican spending, not Democrat. In the meantime, how about if we assume for a minute that those who are making the decision might know a little about the circumstances than we do. If you don't like the fireworks, stay home.

This is really a terrible and irresponsible decision. The Civic Center grounds are simply a powder keg waiting to explode! We need someone with the guts to make the unpopular but right decision for the community.

Just goes to show that people in charge of Florissant dont really seem to concerned about possibly starting a grass fire. There must be a no return policy on fireworks.

I agree with all of the above. It is so dry outside that there is no reason to risk the fireworks display for 20 minutes of oohs and aahs. Be responsible and cancel this year!

I would bet the bigger risk are the people setting off illegal fireworks at their homes. I love our annual fireworks and suspect if the city decides to continue, it will be with fire protection available.

It's important to celebrate our freedom. In many cases it may be the only time of the year it is brought to the attention of the community. Fireworks may cost money but the long term cost of forgetting that our freedom was fought for is much greater. This year it may need to be postponed but never should it be discontinued.

I agree 100% that it is absolutely irresponsible of the city to NOT cancel it. I e-mailed both the mayor and the Parks department just this morning to state this exact thing. Please feel free to use the addresses shown below to do the same.

I am sure thousands of firefighters, fighting forest fires this Wednesday the holiday, would thoroughly agreed to (postpone) a fireworks display. For this year under these extreme circumstances, I believe everyone could appreciate. (Not having fireworks) does not mean other types of celebrations could not be implemented. Of course that would take some one (a LEADER) to actually think of alternatives. I would've canceled it, HAD a larger musical event, and more meaningful things for children. Also would have tried to communicate this change with surrounding municipalities. A good leader needs to make tough decisions.

I don't believe the city is making its decision without the input of the fire chief. If they decide to go ahead, it will be because he believes they can do it safely.

The civic center grounds are an open space, monitored by experts and most of the Florissant fire department. I'm sure that the fireworks cannot be returned or saved for a year. Go enjoy the show and the wonderful tradition we have in Florissant. Focus your concerns on the residents that won't behave as responsibly as the professionals at the civic center.

Yeah sure, go enjoy the show. While your there you can sit and wonder if your house is on fire and who will put it out since,(as you say in your post) MOST of the fire dept. will be there with you.And afterall, this may be the last one anyway, since if a house that catches fire from the city's fireworks will end up sueing the city. Enjoy the show

If you cancel the fireworks, it's going to give the idiots on the street more reason to shoot off fireworks themselves, which is far more dangerous than letting the professionals do it. We find spent fireworks all over our yard and roof after the 4th from various neighbors and even people from the neighborhood across the street shooting off fireworks and not giving a shart where they aim them. THAT is asking for trouble.

I also believe the show needs to be cancelled. My family, and I attend every year, and sad we won't be this year. However much more important to be SAFE, and avoid the dangerous heat this week. Illegal fireworks WILL be set off regardless, they ALWAYS are. My concern is if most of our firefighters/paramedics/poilce officers are at the civic center this year (more than usual due to circumstances) i'm sure it will affect the amount of them on the streets to ensure the law abiding citizens safety against those who decid to (and they will) shoot off their own fireworks. I'd cancel the show, and bring out more officers to the streets, & actually for ONCE enforce the law on NO FIREWORKS to the public. I'm all about pride for our country, and love the show every year, but seems like common sence to cancel. What kind of money will it cost if there is a fire, or someone catches fire, property damaged, people passing out in the heat, & yea the lawsuits that will follow? Happy 4rth to all, please be safe, and hopefully Florissant makes the right decision to ensure everyone's safety.

The 4th is my favorite holiday, and it is because of the fireworks. If Florissant had decided to cancel this year, I would have understood. But if the fire department feels it can be done safely, I'm going to assume that they may have a little more expertise in the area than I have, and I'll be there to watch and enjoy. As far as the "dangerous heat," I would certainly hope no one could successfully sue the city for heat-related maladies just because the city provided outdoor entertainment. Those who are too delicate to handle a few evening hours outdoors can stay home.

This is not the first time the area has been hot and dry. Maybe we could compromise a bit here - all or nothing is not a good way to handle temporary situations. Maybe there could be a modified plan for the fireworks display. Eliminate some of the show that sparks too close to the ground, but keep the less flammable rockets. Fireworks in Florissant is a wonderful event and I think it needs to continue.

It appears that Fire Chief, Police Chief, city staff and mayor are comfortable that things will be safe. I trust their judgment and look forward to a July 4th tradition.

I've always assumed that fireworks shot off by munis are detonated from concrete or steel platforms and explode high in the air. Surely the other municipalities are using this as an excuse to save money. Do we really think sparks are just haphazardly flying everywhere close to the ground when these are launched...or sparks are landing on people's houses? C'mon these fireworks aren't being launched by you and I in our backyards, they are being launched by professionals.

Although I was and continue to be strongly adverse to any fireworks, I must offer my congratuations to Florissant officials, fire and police departments for pulling it off without buring anyones house down. Now if we could just find some way to keep the slobs from leaving their trash all over the Civic Center grounds, it would be almost perfect. Oh wait....I forgot...it's all about them!

By the way, if anyone lost a tube of Fixodent, I have it. Unfortunately, I didn't find the false teeth to go along with it!

I have to say I was wrong, and am happy the fireworks weren't cancelled! Last minute, my young children and I went to a friend's house close by to watch the show. We were set up further away then usual, but it was a perfect night out! Safety always comes first, and when the email went out that Fire Chief Corey deemed it safe, and knowing his grandchildren attend as well, we started setting up! It's hard to trust others with our safety, but once again Florissant officials DID keep us safe! By doing so they allowed children all over to have that "magic in their eyes", anticipation, smiles that are priceless, and a sence of awe that only comes once a year with watching the big firework show. The one thing I was disappointed in was the fact that (especially with dogs) my family and I haven't slept well @ all the last few nights due to the neighborhood "morons" who unsafely set of their own fireworks until @ least 3am. I didn't feel the need to call FPD as the email sent clearly stated extra officers on the street, and zero tolerance. I never saw one officer on my street, and have heard from many family and friends who have had the same issues. Those people are LUCKY no one's property was damaged, and no one was hurt. All in All Big Thanks to all Flor. Officials/FPD/FFirefighters/ambulances/ETC for a successful night! A bigger thanks to the true heroes we celebrate on July 4rth!! These are the people who keep us safe 24/7 & at all costs!!
