Custard Battle Winner Declared
After tasting what each place has to offer, our judges have rendered a final decision.
Our lucky panel of judges had the opportunity to sample both of Florissant’s worthwhile frozen custard contenders, but there can be only one winner.
Before we give you the final verdict, let’s take a look at the pros and cons of both Fritz’s and Doozle’s.
Fritz’s has a retro feel to it. The walk-up windows, fading signs and expansive carport make it feel like the kind of place your grandparents went for a date when they were in high school. There’s a lot to be said for that kind of tradition and legacy.
Doozle’s has a much more modern look to it. This feels like a fast food joint from the 1990s with shiny trim, red tables and most of all, the wonderful convenience of a drive-through.
Unlike the retro Fritz’s, Doozle’s has a website full of useful information about locations, flavors and specials. Looking at it from the outside, I assumed Doozle’s had some kind of advanced custard technology not available in the 1950s. After my fantastic banana split at Fritz’s, I couldn’t wait to try Doozle’s.
To my surprise, it turned out the older stand had a superior product.
“The Frozen Custard (at Doozles) was very similar to Fritz’s, in my opinion, in both texture and flavor but less creamy,” judge Mickey Pietrzak wrote.
“It was still good,” judge Catherine Krummey, our Veggie Viewpoint reviewer, said, “But just not at the level of the custard from Fritz's.”
We ate separately to make sure we didn’t influence one another’s opinions.
Doozle’s is also slightly more expensive than Fritz’s. I ordered a banana split with three scoops of custard and a single topping on each scoop. My total was about a dollar more at Doozle’s than Fritz’s. Depending on what we ordered, the concretes and sundaes were about 60 cents higher.
Doozle’s offers a variety of hard-packed ice cream quarts to take home. Fritz’s, on the other hand, packages up its custard of the day so you can put that in your fridge. The prepacked custard gave Fritz's another boost in the ratings.
That said, we gave Doozle’s a slight edge on toppings. Fritz’s toppings were fresh, but Doozle’s had a slightly larger variety.
If you’re in a hurry to get home and need the convienience of a drive-through, you’ll enjoy what you get from Doozle’s.
If you have enough time to get out of your car and walk to the window, go ahead and indulge in some Fritz’s custard. You’ll be glad you did.
We hereby proudly declare Fritz’s Custard the winner of the Florissant Custard Battle.
